We all need to work together to

KEEP OUR VALLEY GREEN!

Each one of us can make a difference.

Below are ways you can get involved,

as an individual or as a group,

to help reduce litter in our Valley.

Clean School Yard Program (P-12)

With leadership and assistance from teachers and school administrators, students are encouraged to clean up school yard litter, and, in the process, learn NOT to litter in the first place.

Suggestions:

  • Have a grounds clean-up day in the spring and fall. Teachers hold the bags for students to fill.
  • Rotate classes for weekly litter pick up.

  • Add "school yard clean-up" to your Outdoor or Environmental Education curriculum, perhaps in conjunction with Earth Day (April 22) Education.

  • Get the entire school involved. Post a sign-up sheet where each class volunteers to conduct a clean-up. Throughout the school year there are monthly or bi-monthly clean-ups but each class conducts only one or two clean-up activities.

  • Sign up to participate in Eddie's Litterless Road Tour (for kids ages 5-9)

  • Ask us for a few "Don't Trash Our Valley" posters to hang in your school.

  • Download the "Don't Trash Our Valley" logo and place it on your school's web site.

To download our "Don't Trash" logo, right-click on the image, and select "Save Picture As".

You have our permission to include it on your web site IF you make a link from the image to this page.

Why participate?

  • Your school benefits from a clean school yard that will make your students and our community proud.
  • Your school could win the title of "Cleanest School Yard in the Musquodoboit Valley", with a special mention in The TownCryer about your school's accomplishments.

We want to hear from your school!

Let us know how and when your school is planning a "Tidy School Yard" activity, and, because we love to spread good news... we'll post it here!

Staff and students at Dutch Settlement Elementary School, Musquodoboit Rural High School, Musquodoboit Valley Education Centre, and Upper Musquodoboit Consolidated School care about the future of our planet. Throughout the school year, they participate in a variety programs that ensure they know the importance of reducing, reusing and recycling. Way to go!

Eddie's Litterless Road Tour (P-3)

Attention P-3 Teachers Across the Province!

Still finding litter on your school grounds? Need a little help to remind kids that the Earth is not a garbage can?

Well get out your calendars because Eddie is coming to town!  Book your stop on Eddie’s Litterless Road Tour presented by Clean Nova Scotia.

Eddie is a loveable cat (puppet) with a cause that is standing up for all the “critters” in the world that have to live with the garbage we humans throw around. Through humour, rhymes, and song, kids will learn to keep their neighbourhoods clean.

Teachers will be left with a special curriculum-based activity sheet that can be used at a later date, a souvenir poster to help remind kids never to litter, and each child will receive a full colour litter-prevention guide to take home.

Youth groups such as the Girl Guides or Scouts are also welcome to book a presentation for kids in the 5-9 age range.

Adopt-a-Highway Program (Ages 12+)

The Musquodoboit Valley welcomes thousands of visitors each year. The Adopt-A-Highway Program is a volunteer-driven litter clean-up program to help make our roadsides cleaner, safer, and prettier.

In Nova Scotia, the Adopt-a-Highway Program was started in 1997 by the Women's Institutes of Nova Scotia, the Lions Clubs, and Clean Nova Scotia.

The Departments of Environment, Tourism and Culture, Transportation and Public Works and the Resource Recovery Fund Board continue to be strong supporters of this program.

A special sign is placed at either end of the adopted section of roadway to give recognition to volunteer groups.

Adopt-A-Highway and the Department of Transportation will provide your volunteers with appropriate permits, safety vests, litter bags, and signage.

They can also assist with transporting the collected litter to approved landfill sites. All participants must be 16 years of age or older.

In recent years, the following individuals, groups, and organizations have dedicated their time and effort to clean up a portion of our Valley's roadways and our community says THANK YOU!

  • Musquodoboit Valley Lions Club (Angus Redden's to Moose River Rd (5 kms)

  • Eric & Joyce Higgins (Higginsville Rd to Riverside Church)

  • Upper Musquodoboit Women's Institute (Upper Musquodoboit towards Dean/Caribou Rd)

  • Musquodoboit Valley Tourism Association and Valley Weeders (Cornerstone Park)

  • Musquodoboit Valley Tourism Association (Hospital corner to Angus Redden's, Hwy 224)

  • Riverside 4H (Middle Musquodoboit to Elderbank)

  • Upper Musquodoboit Fire Dept (Upper Musquodoboit to Greenwood)

  • Mount Traber Bible Camp (Jct. Wittenburg Hwy & Hwy 224 to Cooks Brook Fire Hall).

On May 9, 2009 Adopt-a-Highway participants, the Musquodoboit Valley Lions Club, once again beautified our community by removing unsightly garbage that has collected along the roadways. If you, your community group, or organization registers to participate in the Adopt-a-Highway Program in our area, please tell us. We want to spread the good news here!

Great Nova Scotia Pick-Me-Up (all ages)

The Great Nova Scotia Pick-Me-Up is a campaign coordinated by Clean Nova Scotia that encourages Nova Scotians to get together to pick up litter.

How Can I Get Involved?

Getting involved with the Great Nova Scotia Pick-Me-Up is simple: All you have to do is bring together a group (friends, family, coworkers, schoolmates), a pre-existing group or just you, pick a place (a favourite park or school, a beach, grounds around a cemetery, or even your own street) and contact Clean Nova Scotia to register.

What’s In It For Me?

You get the great feeling of being a positive force in the fight against litter, and a cleaner neighborhood or beach, plus Clean Nova Scotia will provide you with a free Pick-Me-Up kit. The kit includes an information booklet, advertising posters, an appropriate amount of garbage bags and blue bags and a data card that you can use to keep track of what types of litter you find, everything you will need to have a great Pick-Me-Up.

Coordinators will also receive one free compact tote bag as a thank you for participating (while supplies last).  The tote bag is meant to help you reduce the amount of plastic bags you use on a daily basis.

When Can I Do My Pick-Me-Up?

Typically, Pick-Me-Ups are done in the spring to take advantage of what melted snow unveils, however any time of year is a good time. Litter is a year long problem that needs as much attention as possible.
